The
Florida State University College of Music proudly presents
the eleventh annual Rainbow Concert of World Music,
“Reinventing Rainbow.” Come out for an evening
of acoustic music on Friday or for the “electric
show” on Saturday, or come out both nights for
an optimal world music experience. Friday’s lineup
includes music from Mexico, China, Trinidad, Ireland,
and Uganda. Saturday features the eclectic-electric
grooves of Salsa Florída and the FSU Blues Chilluns
and the South American sounds of Aconcagua. Both concerts
close in fine style with performances by FSU’s
Balinese Gamelan, Sekaa Gong Hanuman Agung.
The gamelan is joined by the master Balinese msuician
I Ketut Gede Asnawa and the outstanding
Balinese dancer Ayu Putu Niastarika.
A
native of Bali, Indonesia, I Ketut Gedé
Asnawa has been playing gamelan music since
the tender age of eight. He is well-known among gamelan
enthusiasts internationally as an innovator in the kreasi
beleganjur and kreasi lelambatan genres.
His award-winning compositions have been performed at
the Jakarta Young Composers’ Festival, the 1986
World Exposition in Vancouver, and the Bali Arts Festival
in Denpasar. He has taught at numerous universities
in North America and is currently a visiting faculty
member at the Center for World Music at the University
of Illinois. Asnawa’s daughter, Ayu Putu
Niastarika, is a highly accomplished dancer
in both traditional and contemporary Balinese styles.
She has performed to acclaim in myriad contexts in both
Indonesia and the United States, from ritualistic Hindu-Balinese
temple ceremonies to modern Balinese dance recitals.
Rainbow offers
a spectrum of musical talent and delights from around
the world—don’t miss it! |
