World Musical Instrument Collection
The Ethnomusicology / World Music program at The Florida State University is the home to a large collection of musical instruments, including multiples of the following (categorized by country):

  • Brazil -- berimbau, cavaquinho, surdo, pandeiro, cuica, tamborim, gansa, reco-reco, agogo, etc.
  • China -- erh-hu, pi-pa, luan, chin, cheng, yang-chin, sheng, ti-tsu, hsiao, hsun, sona, and others
  • Cuba / Puerto Rico -- congas, timbales, and more
  • Dominican Republic -- marimba, tambora
  • Ethiopia -- begena, krar, masinko, and others
  • Ghana -- atumpan, dzil, gonje, wiik; Akan drums, bells, rattles, and others
  • Guatemala -- marimba
  • India -- sitar, tabla
  • Indonesia (Bali) -- gamelan gong kebyar, gamelan baleganjur
  • Japan -- koto, shakuhachi, shamisen, biwa, oh-tsuzumi, taiko, sho, hichiriki, ryuteki, and others
  • Korea -- kayagum, ajeng, many idiophones and membranophones
  • Lebanon -- 'ud
  • Mexico -- guitarrón, vihuela, jarana, requinto, harp
  • Perú -- harp, bombo, charango, kena, pinkillo, siku, tarka, tinya, waka pukru, cajón, and others
  • Syria -- darabouka, 'ud
  • Trinidad -- steel drums
  • United States Native American -- instruments on loan from the FSU Anthropology Collection, including rattles, water drum, etc.
  • Venezuela -- bandola, cuatro, harp, maracas
  • Venezuelan Native American -- Warao instruments on loan from the Dale A. Olsen Collection

The Collection includes many more instruments, and it continues to grow. This collection is not merely for museum or preservation purposes: the majority of the instruments are used daily in the World Music Ensembles in the College of Music of The Florida State University.
