To be submitted online to Florida State University (www.admissions.fsu.edu):

  • Florida State University Application ($30 application fee)
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation
    • Please return to the Florida State University Application and follow the instructions to submit letters online.
    • Although letters can be mailed to the College of Music using our form (http://www.music.fsu.edu/recommendation.pdf), we strongly recommend using the online process for faster service.

To be submitted online to the College of Music (www.music.fsu.edu):

  • Supplemental Music Application (no application fee)
  • Vita/Resume
    • Include education, background, experience, honors and awards, publications, names of former teachers, and any other important information.
  • Statement of Purpose (1000 words or less)
    • addresses interest in musicology
    • what you hope to accomplish with an advanced degree in the field
    • the likelihood of your success
    • music you would enjoy researching and how you would approach that task
    • why you chose The Florida State University

  • Official Transcripts (2 copies)
    • Transcripts are considered official when they are sent from a college or university directly to the Office of Admissions and contain an official seal and signature.
    • Transcripts bearing the statement "issued to student" or transcripts submitted by the applicant are not considered official.
    • International students must send certified English translation.
  • Sample of Research Writing
    • thesis or major term paper
    • demonstrate historical understanding
    • ability to write clearly about musical detail
    • mastery of bibliographic resources and forms
    • control of writing style

Other Requirements:

  • Interview
    • After review of complete applications, a select number of applicants will be invited to interview on or before Jan 16.
    • Application review will begin on Jan 5 and continue through Jan 16. NOTE: Only complete applications will be reviewed.
    • On-campus interviews are available on Feb 6 or 20.

  • GRE
    • Music Subject test NOT required
    • To be submitted electronically to FSU by the testing agency (Institution Code: 5219)
    • If your upper-division GPA is below 3.0, a minimum score of 1000 on the combined verbal and quantitative portions of the GRE must be submitted.
  • TOEFL (International Applicants only) - Am I required to submit a TOEFL?
    • To be submitted electronically to FSU by the testing agency (Institution Code: 5219)
    • Minimum required scores:
      • Written Test = 550
      • Computer-based Test = 213
      • Internet-based Test = 80

Final Admissions Deadline

The College of Music reserves the right to close admission early if warranted by enrollment limitations and the number and quality of applications. Additionally, review of an application is not guaranteed if submitted after the January 6-16 review period.
