Theodore Newman Collection

Theodore Newman (1933-1975) was an American composer during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. Mr. Newman studied at the University of Miami (FL) and the Julliard School. During his time at the Julliard School, Newman studied with three famous teachers: William Bergsma, Vittorio Giannini, and Vincent Persichetti. Following his education, Theodore Newman composed several instrumental and vocal works.

The collection is composed of materials used by former Florida State University graduate student, the late Kathleen Ciambella, for an uncompleted thesis. Her topic was a study of Theodore Newman's life and selected works. There are many hand-written notes by the author and recordings (in reel-to-reel and tape format) of Newman's works.

Letters from William Bergsma and Vincent Persichetti concerning Newman's works, personality, and studies are also in this collection. Although there is no complete thesis in the collection, it provides a strong overview of Theodore Newman's life and works, the Julliard School during the early 1960s, and the Young Composers Project financed by the Ford Foundation.
