Reference and Library Research
Library Research
Our library research area is located on our first floor. Items in library research generally circulate only to instructors, and only for one week. Much of library research is occupied by scores, particularly collected scholarly editions of composers' complete works, and series such as Corpus Mensurabilis Musicae and the various Recent Researches sets devoted to a music of a particular place, style, or era. Library research also contains facsimile editions of scores and books, and treatises and monographs of particular historical significance.
Reference
Our reference section also resides on the first floor. Unlike library research items, reference books never circulate, as they are meant to stay in the library at all times for all patrons. They consist of standard works to consult for music research, such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, indexes, directories, handbooks, style manuals, and standard monographs.
There are a few reference items we keep on our second floor as well, at the end of our periodicals section. These items, marked "upstairs reference", are mostly duplicates of what we have on the first floor.
