Recordings

The library owns over 40,000 pieces of recorded media in various formats. Sound recordings are principally of classical and jazz music, but also include substantial world, folk, and popular music collections; video recordings consist of performances (opera and musical theater especially) as well as documentary and instructional materials. All recordings reside behind the circulation desk and must be searched through the catalog.

Partially cataloged items (which show the note "IN PROCESS" in the catalog) may be rush requested via a form available at the circulation desk. Processing time for recordings is generally 24-48 hours.

The library preserves many local performances by FSU ensembles, faculty, and doctoral students, most recently on CD and DVD; older local performances may be on VHS cassette, DAT (digital audio tape), or reel-to-reel tape. The library owns DAT and reel-to-reel players that may be used by arrangement. Reel-to-reel recordings are not searchable in the catalog, but are indexed in our special collections section.

Local performances are also indexed by date in the program books available for consultation at the circulation desk.
