Microforms
Our microforms are located on the second floor, in the grey metal cabinets in our periodicals area. Like periodicals, they do not circulate. Microforms require a viewing machine to display their text. The library has one microform viewer and one viewer/scanner in our periodicals area.
There are two kinds of microforms: microfilm (film wound onto a spool), and microfiche (flat, printed film sheets). Microforms are effective as a space-saving format, but at the cost of being more cumbersome and difficult to use than the standard book. If assistance is needed with microform viewing, please ask for help at the circulation desk. Our microforms generally consist of periodicals or theses/dissertations.
Call numbers for microfiche begin with "MIF", while call numbers for microfilm begin with "FLM." Microfilm versions of periodicals have a Dewey Decimal System number which corresponds, as appropriate, to the call number for the print version in our catalog. All other microforms use an accession-style call number, similar to recordings.
