John K. Southall is the courtesy Associate Professor of Music Education/Therapy assigned to Indian River State College. He is the Community Endowed Teaching Chair in Fine Arts at IRSC and also serves as Coordinator of Music Education/Therapy and Director of Bands and teaches in the area of Music Education.

Dr. Southall received the Bachelor’s degree from Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University, the Master’s degree from The Florida State University, and the Ph.D. from The Florida State University. He has served on the faculties of The University of Missouri-St. Louis, Nova Southeastern University, and Broward Community College. He has served as the Music Curriculum Specialist, K-12, for the Broward County school district in Florida. He has also served as Director of Bands at Western, Piper, and Ely High Schools in Broward County.

Dr. Southall is an active conductor, presenter and adjudicator in the Southeastern United States. He is currently serving on the Florida Music Educators Association’s Board of Directors. He is an editorial board member for the Research Perspectives in Music Education journal. He is serving on the Florida Bandmasters Association’s Ethics committee and adjudication committee, and has served as the coordinator and presenter for the Florida Bandmasters Association’s Adjudicator Recertification seminar. He has served as the associate director of the FSU Summer Music Camps and has served as the conductor and director of the FSU Summer Music Camps Honors Chamber Winds program. Dr. Southall has also served on numerous K-20 committees and curriculum writing teams in Florida and has been published in both state and national journals.
