College of Music Centennial Events

The 2010-2011 Concert Season marks the 100th anniversary of the College of Music at FSU! To honor the centennial, the College of Music faculty and ensembles are pleased to present to following concerts and events:

Faculty Chamber Series (Ticketed)
Ernst von Dohnányi
Friday, September 24 at 8:00p.m.
Opperman Music Hall
Tickets: $9 adults; $6 seniors/non-FSU students; FSU students free w/ID

Ernst von Dohnányi was involved in the growth of the FSU College of Music in ways both numerous and profound. In celebration of 100 years of music at FSU, this chamber music concert pays tribute to those musical and artistic influences of Dohnányi which so significantly helped to shape and strengthen the College of Music at FSU. Works to be performed include Contrasts by Béla Bartók; Two Songs for Alto and Viola (Op. 91) by Johannes Brahms; and Dohnányi’s Sextet (Op. 37). Faculty to perform include: Wanda Brister, mezzo-soprano; Deborah Bish, clarinet; Frank Kowalsky, clarinet; Corinne Stillwell, violin; Pamela Ryan, viola; Evan Jones, cello; Michelle Stebleton, horn; Deloise Lima, piano; and Read Gainsford, piano. A pre-concert lecture will be given at 7:00 p.m. in Lindsay Recital Hall by Dohnányi scholar, Jay Grymes.

A Grand Reopening of Ruby Diamond:
Commemorating 100 years of excellence within the College of Music
Friday, October 8 at 8:00 p.m.
Ruby Diamond Auditorium
Tickets: $25 adults; FSU students $15 with ID
This event is reserved seating. Tickets are available through the College of Music Box Office, located in the lobby of Ruby Diamond Auditorium. Cash or checks only (made payable to FSU) – no credit or debit cards. The College of Music Box Office is open Monday-Friday from 11:00 am-2:00 pm, beginning September 13. Please call 645-7949 for more information.

Join the College of Music as we celebrate our centennial and the reopening of Ruby Diamond. University ensembles will perform newly commissioned works for the event, including Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Fanfare, Reminiscence and Celebration (University Symphony Orchestra), Scott McAllister’s Barnburner (Wind Orchestra), The Jewel Within by Paul McKee (Jazz Ensemble I) and Ola Gjeilo’s Rays of Light (Combined Choruses of 750 voices) as well as other selections. Black tie optional.


USO – USO at FSU (Ticketed)
Friday, October 15 at 8:00 p.m.
Opperman Music Hall
Tickets: $9 adults; $6 seniors/non-FSU students; FSU students free w/ID

The USO, under the direction of Alexander Jiménez (4th conductor of the USO), will highlight the history of orchestral studies at FSU since its formation in 1924, under conductor Ethel Maud. Trio Solis (Read Gainsford, Corinne Stillwell, and Gregory Sauer) will appear as soloists for the concert, which includes Ellen Zwilich's new work Fanfare, Reminiscence and Celebration, Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, and the Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique.

College of Music faculty celebrate both 100 years of music at FSU and the 200th anniversary of Schumann’s birth (June 8, 1810) with a concert of featuring selections of both his vocal and instrumental chamber works, including Fantasiestücke for Clarinet and Piano (Op. 73), Spanisches Liebeslieder (Op. 138), Adagio and Allegro for Horn and Piano (Op. 70) and the Piano Trio No. 2 in F Major (Op. 80). Faculty performing for this concert include: Marcìa Porter, soprano; Wanda Brister, mezzo-soprano; Stanford Olsen, tenor; David Okerlund, baritone; Frank Kowalsky, clarinet; Corinne Stillwell, violin; Greg Sauer, cello; Michelle Stebleton, horn; Read Gainsford, piano; Timothy Hoekman, piano; Deloise Lima, piano; and Valerie M. Trujillo, piano.


Fall Opera
Donizetti’s L'Elisir d'Amore (Ticketed)
November 4-6 at 7:30 p.m.
November 7 at 2:00 p.m.

Restaged on FSU campus circa 1910, Nemorino and Belcore compete for Adina’s love in Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore (The Elixir of Love). Patrons of all ages will find fond memories of FSU evoked in the costuming and set design, including scenes which take place at the Westcott building (then known as the administration building) and The Sweet Shop, an iconic eatery that flourished on campus for nearly 90 years. The Elixir of Love is one of the most frequently performed of all Donizetti's operas, and it contains the popular aria "Una furtiva lagrima," one of the most famous and often-excerpted arias in all of opera.


Symphonic Band (Ticketed)
November 17, 2010 at 8:00 p.m.
Ruby Diamond Auditorium
Tickets: $9 adults; $6 seniors/non-FSU students; FSU students free w/ID

Dr. Dunnigan and the Symphonic Band will join in the College’s Centennial Celebration with a special performance on November 17th to include Black Dog (work of alumnus Scott McAllister), featuring Deborah Bish, soloist, and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, which celebrates its own centennial: first premiered by the Ballets Russes in Paris on 25 June 1910, the Firebird Suite served not only Stravinsky's 'breakthrough piece', but also marked the beginning of collaborations between Stravinsky and Sergei Diaghilev that would also produce Petrushka and The Rite of Spring.
