Speak Test
A note to all international graduate students for whom English is a foreign language:
NOTE: The College of Music admissions requirements exceed University minimum standards. Official English Language Proficiency results are required of all international applicants whose native language is not English, including applicants who have already studied in an English speaking country for any length of time.
In order to be considered for a Graduate Assistantship from the College of Music you must complete the following:
Attain the minimum required scores on one of the following exams:
- TOEFL
- Written Test = 590
- Internet-based Test = 97
- Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) = 90
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) = 7.5
AND…
- Score a minimum of 26 on the speaking portion of the IBTOEFL or;
- Score a minimum of 6.5 on the speaking portion of the IELTS or;
- Achieve one of the scores below on the SPEAK Test (offered by FSU) to qualify for a graduate assistantship–
- Score 50 on the SPEAK Test: Approved for all classroom instruction.
- Score 45 on the SPEAK Test: Approved for one-to-one applied music instruction and non-teaching duties.
- Score 40 on the SPEAK test: Approved for one-to-one applied music instruction, with mandatory, concurrent enrollment in English language coursework - as selected by Dr. Maria Mendoza – until you retest at a score level of 45.
SPEAK (Speaking Proficiency English Assessment Kit) is a test for evaluating the English speaking ability of non-native speakers of English. SPEAK is designed by Educational Testing Services (ETS), and is the institutional version of the Test of Spoken English. At FSU, the SPEAK test is administered by the Center for Intensive English Studies to international students who may be awarded a graduate assistantship in an academic department at Florida State University.

Registration
To register, please contact the College of Music Admissions Office with your preferred date at least two weeks in advance.
If you are an international non-performance applicant and are not required to perform a live audition on-campus, you must make arrangements to take the SPEAK test in order to be considered for a Graduate Assistantship.
Testing Location
The SPEAK test is administered on-campus in the Eppes Building, room 417 (the Language Lab), and takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. The lab can accommodate approximately 16 students at one time. PLEASE BRING A PHOTO ID TO THE EXAM. There is no charge for the first time that a student takes the SPEAK test.
