Sample Exemption Exam for MVK 3131 A and B-Group Piano

Directions: To exempt MVK 3131 A and B, you must demonstrate proficiency on 5 of the following 8 objectives. Please study the objectives and sample music examples. If you believe that you are not ready, please come to a later group piano placement exam (if one exists) or sign up for MVK 3131 A. If you believe that you are not likely to successfully complete 5 of the 8 objectives, then registering for MVK 3131 A may serve as a worthwhile review.
If you do not wish to take the exam at this time, turn this sheet in to the assigned location and register for MVK 3131 A.
If you believe that you can perform 5 of the 8 objectives, then continue with the exam. Please check 5 objectives that you wish to play for the examiner. Then line up and wait for your turn. The exam will last approximately 6 minutes.
- I can perform any of the 12 major scales and/or 12 harmonic minor scales (hands separately, 2 octaves, moderate tempo, correct fingering and notes).
- I can perform all five forms of 7th chords hands together in any of the 12 major keys, hands together.
- I can harmonize the following minor melody using the chords as indicated in the left hand. I also can transpose the harmonization up or down a major or minor 3rd.
- I can perform an intermediate solo repertoire piece musically. (Ex. sonatinas, etudes by Burgmuller or Heller, Fur Elise, short preludes and fugues by Bach, etc.)
- I can harmonize the following using at least one secondary dominant (out of key V or V7) chord. You may indicate the chords under the example, if needed.
- I can improvise a R.H. melody when supplied with a chord progression, to be played by the L.H. Note: This is required for students desiring to exempt MVK 2125-Improvisation.
- I can sightread an early intermediate piece of solo repertoire.
- I can play the following open-score with transposing instruments example: (to be provided on-site)
