Periodicals
Our periodicals are held on the second floor of the library. They do not circulate, as they are meant to stay in the library at all times for all patrons. They are mostly bound in green covers, and most have a classification number beginning with 780.5. (This is a Dewey Decimal classification for music periodicals.)
The letters following "780.5" are shelved alphabetically, and most often refer to the title and/or subject matter of the periodical itself. For example, under "780.5 O" one will find "opera", under "780.5 S" one will find "Strings" and "Strad", etc.
A few periodicals may be found in other areas of the library, such as those found in the books area with Library of Congress designation (ML or MT), and those found in microforms.
The periodical index table is located in the periodicals section, and contains publications relating to the indexing and abstracting of periodicals. Among these are The Music Index, with its accompanying Subject Headings List (ML 118 .M84, 1949-2005), and the RILM Abstracts of Music Literature (Z 6811 R5, 1967-1998). The most recent editions of the RILM Abstracts can also be found online through FSU Databases.
